Are you looking for a unique getaway experience where sun-drenched vineyards stretch forth and kiss the horizon? Welcome to a wine lover’s paradise amid the romantic Russian River Valley and California’s serene and tumbling hills.
To make the most of your retreat and wine-tasting experience, you’ll need some insider knowledge to find all the best spots, from accommodations to wineries, restaurants, and all those fun things to do in the community. So, let’s get started with our five best tips, and you’ll be ready to swirl, sip, and repeat in no time.
1. Choose Ideal Accommodations for Wine Tourists
Maybe we’re a little biased, but we love our inn — and so do our guests, who often return repeatedly. Unlike an ordinary hotel, the Inn at Occidental blends a warm, charming, and friendly atmosphere with luxurious comfort, convenience, and a love for wine.
When you stay at our inn, you’ll have easy access to all the nearby vineyards and a peaceful escape where you can truly relax. Moreover, our recently opened wine bar makes our inn the perfect wine lover’s haven.
2. Find the Best Times for Russian River Valley Wine-Tasting
Timing is everything when planning your perfect wine-tasting getaway in the Russian River Valley. While you can visit year-round, the region’s magic happens between late summer and early fall — the ideal time for the grape harvest, also known as “crush season.”
The vineyards buzz with energy, and the weather is ideal and comfortable. However, autumn is also the perfect time to witness the winemaking experience firsthand! And you’ll enjoy the gorgeous autumn backdrop when the grapevine leaves change color.
If you want to avoid the crowds, then consider springtime. You’ll miss crush season, but you’ll view the vineyard when the first leaves and buds appear — before the flowers and tendrils form. The field is stunning and steeped in wonder, yawning toward the horizon. Regardless of which season you visit, though, the Russian River Valley offers something special and unique for everyone during every season.
3. Visit Top Wineries in the Russian River Valley
There are many different wineries to visit in the Russian River Valley, making your choice of where to stop, swirl, and sip more challenging. Worry not. We’ve put together a list of some of the area’s best wineries — and they’re all within a convenient 10-15 minute drive from our inn.
Freeman Vineyard and Winery
Freeman Vineyard and Winery is nestled in the cool and foggy hills of the Russian River Valley. Stopping here allows you to sample some of California’s delectable, award-winning wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Akiko and Ken Freeman created these small-batch wines using Burgundian winemaking techniques, and the winery’s prime location adds layers to the terroir and flavor.
DRNK Wines
Unlike other wineries, DRNK Wines uses ingredients from diverse vineyards across Sonoma County to create unique wines in small batches. And its name? A clever acronym carefully formed using the first letter of the winery’s four partners’ first initials. As for the wine, it’s definitely a must-try, but like other wineries in the valley, you’ll need an appointment — be it for a tasting and cave tour or a private cave tasting.
Balletto Vineyards
Balletto Vineyards is a family-owned estate that firmly believes in — and practices — sustainable farming. However, that’s not all. Every bottle of Balletto Wines is like savoring vineyard history and vino dedication and experience. And Balletto guides you through a tasting to ensure you get the most from your experience. Best of all? Unlike many other wineries, Balletto accepts walk-in guests — no wine-tasting appointments are needed.
Merry Edwards Winery
Merry Edwards Winery was founded by Merry Edwards — one of California’s first female winemakers. A visit to this winery is as warm as it is welcoming, and it’s committed to sustainable practices from the design of its permeable concrete parking lot that allows excess rainwater to replenish groundwater to its solar panels for electricity and pollinator-friendly landscaping.
Of course, the wines produced here are extraordinary in taste, texture, and color. This vineyard uses some unique practices — lengthy cold soaks — to pull as much pigmentation and tannins as possible from the grapes, giving them those gorgeous jewel-toned hues. And the hot fermentations, among other things, flavor up its delightful sips.
Dutton Goldfield Winery
Dutton Goldfield began with a handshake and a dream in 1998 and has grown into a fine winery with some of the best sips. Wines produced here are renowned for their precision, balance, and terroir expression. And whether you’re new to the world of wine or a bonafide connoisseur, you’ll find a warm, welcoming environment — and plenty of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and occasionally a few seasonal releases. However, the latter sells out fast.
4. Dine at Must-Try Local Restaurants
One of the magnificent benefits of staying at our inn is that you’ll find many alluring restaurants nearby, whether casual, fine dining or even a cozy café. Several fantastic eateries, like the ever-popular Hazel Restaurant, are within walking distance, and they dish up phenomenal rustic Californian-Mediterranean cuisine using two wood-fired ovens.
Drive a little further, and you’ll find delectable southern-style comfort food made with farm-to-table ingredients at Rocker Oysterfellers. The restaurant offers Sonoma County wines, and its Lucas Wharf location in Bodega Bay is an approximate 20-minute drive from our inn.
Finally, Underwood Bar and Bistro is a fantastic stop and a 10-minute drive from the Inn at Occidental. It serves tasty cocktails and upscale cuisine like duck confit, salmon and oysters, flat iron frites, and pan-roasted swordfish.
5. Try More Fun Things to Do in West Sonoma County
Even if the primary goal for your getaway is to swirl, sip, and savor the Russian River Valley flavors, there are so many other things to do between flights of Pinot Noir, like:
- Antique Shopping
- Hiking and Biking
- Golfing
- Spa Day
- Galleries
- Festivals, and so much more!
So, consider your preferences and the experiences you want to have, and then plan accordingly.
